Arsenal boss hopes midfielder will play again in late January

Injured England star Jack Wilshere is well on track to make a New Year return to the Arsenal side, according to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger. Wilshere underwent successful surgery on his troublesome ankle, which has sidelined him for club and country all season, in September. The 19-year-old sustained the original problem in the Euro 2012 qualifier between England and Switzerland in June before aggravating it during a pre-season game the following month. Arsenal hoped Wilshere may be able to avoid surgery, but decided to send him under the knife when the injury failed to respond to treatment. The midfielder is continuing his rehabilitation in the gym and is thought to have pencilled in a reserve team return in mid-January.

Target

Wenger said: "He is progressing like somebody who has just had surgery. He's progressing very well. "We have to assess him again in two or three weeks. He is working very hard at the moment. "It's too early to say [a possible return date]. But a target could be the beginning of 2012. "When I say that I mean the end of January or February - something like that."
