Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has called for "cool heads" as tensions continue to rise regarding the sanctions imposed on Rangers.
The Ibrox club, already in administration, have been hit with a £160,000 fine and a 12-month transfer embargo by the Scottish Football Association.
That has led to members of the SFA panel being targeted by incensed Rangers fans.
But things could get worse for the Glasgow club with the 12 Scottish Premier League clubs set to vote on Monday whether to introduce tougher punishment for top-flight sides facing liquidation.
Rangers could still be forced into liquidation and any 'newco' club may be deducted 10 points for two seasons as well as being deducted 75% of their SPL income over three seasons.
Emotions
Thompson was part of the SPL board that helped draft the proposals but he has called for calm in the wake of rising frustrations across the country.
"Emotions are running very high across all of Scotland at the moment," Thompson told Sky Sports.
"It is unfortunate the stage it has got to.
"It is a time for cool heads and a bit of reflection on everything that has happened and why have we got to the stage we have got to.
"It is not a great reflection on Scotland as a nation either, so hopefully we can all just reflect on it and talk properly and sensibly about the whole thing and the way forward."
