Barcelona talent wants to play for Ajax, says Overmars

Ajax are confident of landing Barcelona youngster Marc Muniesa on a season-long loan to replace captain Jan Vertonghen. Vertonghen joined Tottenham earlier this month but Ajax's sporting director, Marc Overmars, has acted quickly by turning to his former club Barca in order to strengthen the Dutch side's defence. Muniesa is highly-rated having appeared twice for the first team under Pep Guardiola and the Catalan club are keen for him to sign a new deal at the Camp Nou. But the 20-year-old is also expected to be allowed to continue his development in Holland. "He wants to come here and is open to the possibility," Overmars told De Telegraaf. "Barcelona will talk to him on Tuesday and offer a new contract and once he has signed that he will be allowed to talk to Ajax. "We will receive a call from the Barcelona and I will be waiting for that."

Good fit

Ajax coach Frank de Boer, also a former Barca player, approves of the move for the Spain Under 21 international and already has thoughts on how he would use the versatile young talent. "Muniesa has played many games in Spain's Segunda A division (with Barca B)," said De Boer. "I have seen many DVDs of him. He has a great left foot and genuinely fits the Ajax profile. "I do not see him as a defensive midfielder, but more as a left-back or central defender."
