Young centre-back to spend six months with League One club

Celtic defender Josh Thompson will on Monday join Portsmouth on a six-month loan, Sky Sports sources understand. The 21-year-old centre-back has been training with the League One club but they could not quite agree a deal in time for Saturday's first game of the season against Bournemouth. Financially-stricken Portsmouth had previously been under a transfer embargo after going into administration but they are now free to sign players. Ten new faces arrived at Fratton Park on Thursday and Thompson will at the beginning of next week also move to the South Coast. The former England Under 19 international joined Celtic back in 2009 from Stockport County for £300,000 and he has one year left on his current contract. Thompson ended last season at Wembley on loan with Johnstone's Paint Trophy winners Chesterfield after starting the campaign with Championship outfit Peterborough United.
