Who will be the top scorer in the Premier League this season? We look at the odds and assess the credentials of the contenders.

Romelu Lukaku went goal crazy on Saturday against Bournemouth by scoring four and he thrust himself to the top of the goalscoring charts.

The Everton striker now has 16 goals, which took him past Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - all of whom have 15 strikes to their name. However, Lukaku doesn't head the betting.

Here's a look at the favourites according to Sky Bet's top goalscorer market.

Harry Kane - 14 goals - 3/1 with Sky Bet

Despite having two goals to make up on Lukaku's tally, the Tottenham striker is one of two joint favourites in what is a competitive betting heat. The reason for the confidence behind Kane? It's probably two-fold.

Firstly, Kane pipped Leicester City's Jamie Vardy to the top scorer award last season with a 25-goal tally and he has the best minutes-per-goal ratio of the top-five contenders this season. The Spurs striker scores a goal every 116 minutes, which puts himself well ahead of someone like Ibrahimovic, who finds the net once every 138 minutes.

"He's my favourite to win it," said Gerry Francis on Premier League Daily.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 15 goals - 3/1 with Sky Bet

Where would Manchester United be without Ibrahimovic's goals this season?

The 35-year-old has been a mainstay in Jose Mourinho's side, where he has led the line with his usual silky yet authoritative nature. The goals have flowed too and his tally of 15 makes even better reading when you consider he went six league games without scoring during a barren spell in September. Since breaking that run against Swansea, the Swede has scored nine goals in his last 12 Premier League appearances.

Diego Costa - 15 goals - 100/30 with Sky Bet

Costa will be hoping to add to his tally when Chelsea travel to Burnley on Super Sunday.

Although Chelsea have maintained their relentless surge towards the Premier League title, the goals have dried up for Costa of late since he was dropped by Antonio Conte following a reported training ground bust-up.

He's only scored once since that fallout and missed a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Anfield against Liverpool.

However, Francis is confident Costa will get back on the goal-trail.

He said: "You need to get a goal to get you on a little run - we saw that with Lukaku - the best way to bobble one in off your shin to get you going again."

Romelu Lukaku - 16 goals - 7/2 with Sky Bet

Is there a better striker outside the top-six clubs?

The 23-year-old, who has never scored more than 17 in one campaign, is very much on course for a personal best season. He's now reached double figures in the league for a fifth straight season and is the league's hottest striker based on recent form.

His haul at the weekend against a ragged Bournemouth defence was his second hat-trick of the season and he's now scored seven goals in his last six games. "He's world class," hailed his boss Ronald Koeman after his performance against the Cherries.

Alexis Sanchez - 15 goals - 8/1 with Sky Bet

Sanchez's role has changed this season in Arsene Wenger's side, which has seen him go from being a wide man to the central striker - his goal return suggests it's a decision that is paying off.

The Arsenal man was as short as 3/1 for the Golden Boot in December as he led the way with 12 goals but a return of just three in eight games has seen the likes of Lukaku and Kane close the gap.

Other contenders

Jermain Defoe (18/1) certainly deserves a mention for his sensational haul of 14 goals for relegation-threatened Sunderland, who have only mustered 24 goals in total this season.

No player has even won the Premier League Golden Boot for a team that was relegated in the same season, although Andy Johnson scored 21 goals in the 2005/06 season for Crystal Palace, who did fall through the trap door that season.

The only other player in single figures in the betting is Sergio Aguero (9/1) although his tally of 11 goals leaves him with plenty of work to do. The emergence of Gabriel Jesus, who has kept Aguero out of the Manchester City side in the last two matches, is also another stumbling block.

However, his backers will point to his goal per minutes ratio (122) which is only bettered by Kane. If he gets his place back, that 9/1 will surely disappear.
