Everton in talks over deal for Greek defender

Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed he is keen to land Kostas Manolas from AEK Athens and has spoken to the Greek defender's representatives. Moyes is keen to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes next Tuesday and has money to spend after a deal was agreed to sell Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to Spartak Moscow. Highly-rated centre-back Manolas, 20, has been on Everton's radar for some time and Sky Sports revealed before Christmas they were leading the chase for the youngster. Moyes admits he would not yet be ready for a regular starting spot at Goodison Park but feels he has a bright future and is thinking about making an official offer. Talks have been held with both the player's camp and his club, with Moyes understood to be trying to set up a £1million deal. "He's a young boy we have looked at for a while, and we know quite a lot about him," said the Toffees manager in the Daily Telegraph.

Exciting

"We could do with a centre-back, although ideally someone who could go straight into the team, and he couldn't at the moment. "But he's got potential, his representatives have been in, and we have spoken to the club." Moyes' immediate focus is on Friday's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Fulham, and he is determined to make the most of the competition as Everton are currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League. "It is our last realistic chance of winning a trophy this season," he said. "The Premier League is still really exciting, but it's down to me and the players to give the supporters something to shout about."
