Compensation holds up Rodgers deal as Liverpool stall

Sky Sports sources understand Liverpool are stalling on the compensation fee Swansea are demanding for manager Brendan Rodgers. The Swans confirmed on Wednesday talks between the two clubs were under way after Rodgers revealed he wanted to leave the Liberty Stadium for Merseyside. The Welsh club's chairman, Huw Jenkins, said on Wednesday evening he expected the issue of compensation to be resolved within the next 24 hours, with Liverpool poised to confirm Rodgers as their new manager sometime on Thursday. However, it appears talks have hit a snag, with the Reds reluctant to pay a release fee reported to be in the region of £3-5million. Negotiations between the two clubs are expected to continue on Thursday, with the discrepancy over compensation appearing to be the only barrier preventing the move. Rodgers initially rejected the chance to talk to Liverpool but Jenkins confirmed on Wednesday the Northern Irishman had experienced a change of heart. Up until recently, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was thought to be a frontrunner for the Anfield role, but chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed he is committed to the Latics.
