Vitesse Arnhem defender heading to England for medical

Southampton have reached an agreement with Vitesse Arnhem to sign defender Alexander Buttner, the Dutch club have announced. The 23-year-old left-back has played more than 100 games for the Dutch side and has been interesting a number of teams this summer. He was named in former Holland boss Bert van Marwijk's preliminary squad for Euro 2012 but failed to make the cut when it was reduced to the final 23. The Eredivisie club confirmed Buttner would travel to England as soon as possible to undergo a medical with Saints. Southampton's opening offer was rejected but Vitesse said an improved deal was put on the table, which they have now accepted. Buttner expressed his desire to join Southampton this week and Vitesse have given the green light for him to depart. "Vitesse and Southampton have agreed the transition of Alexander Buttner to the Saints," the club posted on their official website.
