Ex-England striker set to make Stoke bow against Premier League champions

The Premier League has ratified the transfer of former England striker Michael Owen to Stoke City. The Potters announced they had agreed a one-year deal with Owen, 32, on Tuesday following his summer release by Manchester United. But Stoke and Owen had to wait for confirmation from the Premier League of his eligibility to be named in Tony Pulis' 25-man squad. The deadline for top-flight clubs to submit their squad lists passed at 4pm on Tuesday and it was unclear whether Stoke had provided the relevant documents in time.

Now the deal has been approved and Owen, who scored 40 goals in 89 caps for England, is available to make his debut in the Potters' home clash against Premier League champions Manchester City on September 15. A Premier League statement said: "The Premier League Board has confirmed to Stoke City the registration of Michael Owen. Consequently he can be included in their 25-man playing squad." Owen Tweeted: "It's official! Deal done. I'm a Stoke player. Can't wait to get going."
