Premier League questions: Will Petr Cech recover from horror debut? Can Man City deal early title blow?
Saturday 15 August 2015 11:03, UK
Ahead of the second round of Premier League fixtures, we look at some of the questions that may be answered this weekend.
There's a massive game at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City host Chelsea on Super Sunday, after Arsenal look to come back to winning ways as they travel to Crystal Palace.
With Aston Villa and Manchester United in action on Friday night, we take a look at nine questions that could be answered after Saturday's, Sunday's and Monday's games...
Can Cech recover from nightmare debut?
The signing of Petr Cech was hailed as the missing piece for Arsenal in their bid to build a title-winning side, but things didn’t start well for him as he was caught out for both of West Ham’s goals last weekend.
There’s no doubting the 34-year-old’s quality, but Crystal Palace is a tough place to visit and they will want to test the Gunners goalkeeper as much as possible.
While Arsene Wenger’s men looked a little short in front of goal, the first thing to do is ensure they’re not going to let any in at the other end, so Sunday’s trip to Selhurst Park is a big game for Cech.
Will City land an early title blow?
It’s only the second fixture of the season, but Sunday’s clash at the Etihad Stadium could already have an impact on the Premier League title race.
Chelsea visit Manuel Pellegrini’s side having been held by Swansea on Saturday Night Football, and Jose Mourinho knows they can’t afford to allow City to open a large points gap too early.
The two drew 1-1 in the corresponding fixture last term as Frank Lampard rescued a late point against his former club – Mourinho may well settle for the same result this time around.
Can Coutinho prove Dunga wrong?
There were some raised eyebrows earlier this week when Dunga announced his Brazil squad, bringing in veteran midfielder Kaka in place of Philippe Coutinho.
The 23-year-old scored a stunning winner at Stoke last weekend and has been one of Brendan Rodgers’ best performers of late, and he’ll be desperate to prove Dunga wrong against Bournemouth on Monday Night Football.
It’s a big night for the Cherries, who will relish the big occasions like these after their incredible six-year rise to the Premier League, but Coutinho and co. may just spoil their night.
Will Koeman’s return boost Southampton?
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman had to watch his side from afar last weekend, after injuring himself during a training session, but the Dutchman is back for the visit of Everton on Saturday.
Newcastle came from behind to cancel out Graziano Pelle’s opener and move 2-1 in front last weekend, before Shane Long secured a point for the Saints.
Koeman has quickly established himself as a popular figure on the south coast, and the St Mary’s faithful will be delighted to see him on the touchline for their first home game of the season.
Are Sunderland in real trouble?
The alarm bells were ringing for Sunderland after just 25 minutes at the King Power Stadium last Saturday. Jamie Vardy and a double from Riyad Mahrez put Claudio Ranieri’s men 3-0 up and the Black Cats never looked like getting back in it.
Dick Advocaat guided Sunderland to safety at the end of last season with one defeat in their last six fixtures, but they couldn’t keep the momentum going into the opening day.
Next up is a clash with newly promoted Norwich, and these are the games Advocaat knows his side need to win if they are to keep themselves clear of danger.
Will the Tinker Man avoid tinkering?
Claudio Ranieri garnered a reputation for chopping and changing his Chelsea side, but last weekend’s 4-2 win against Sunderland may persuade him to leave things be.
The Foxes boss has already said Jamie Vardy will be involved, despite his recent fine for allegedly using racist language, and Ranieri appears to have no fresh injury concerns for the trip to West Ham.
With Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both getting on the scoresheet, while debutant Shinji Okazaki also impressed, Leicester may well start with the same XI to try and reproduce the same winning formula.
Can Ayew build on dream start?
Garry Monk was disappointed the physio row took the attention away from what was an excellent Swansea performance at Chelsea on Saturday.
Andre Ayew cancelled out Oscar’s opener for the reigning champions, and the free signing from Marseille could prove to be one of the summer’s best deals.
Newcastle conceded 63 goals last season – only QPR let in more in the Premier League – so Ayew will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet once again.
Are Stoke destined for big things?
They may have lost to Liverpool last weekend, but Stoke are amassing a top-quality squad of players, and the addition of Xherdan Shaqiri is a real statement of intent from the Potters.
Mark Hughes guided his side to ninth last season, and the next step is to start challenging for the European places.
If they are serious about moving up a level, trips like Saturday’s to White Hart Lane are games they will have to get results from.
Can Watford continue unbeaten start?
Of the promoted sides, Watford were the only ones not to lose their opening fixture. In fact, they were agonisingly close to winning at Everton until Arouna Kone’s late equaliser.
Quique Sanchez Flores was delighted with his team’s display at Goodison Park, and they now have their first home fixture as they host West Brom.
Tony Pulis admitted he got his tactics wrong as the Baggies lost 3-0 to Manchester City, so he’ll be desperate to turn things around at Vicarage Road, meaning the Hornets will have to be at the top of their game on Saturday.
