Newcastle United must win Saturday’s match against Watford to ease the mounting pressure on the Premier League strugglers, Dutch defender Daryl Janmaat has said.

The Magpies are currently propping up the table alongside local rivals Sunderland and Stoke City on two points, and have failed to win a single game so far this season.

Steve McClaren's side have also failed to scored in their last four league matches, making it 402 minutes without a league goal following Monday's 2-0 defeat at West Ham.

The only game in which they have managed to get on the scoresheet was their opening game of the season against Southampton when Georginio Wijnaldum put them ahead, only for the match to end in a 2-2 draw.

McClaren was appointed in June on a three-year deal with hopes to improve on Newcastle's 15th-place finish last season when they narrowly avoided relegation.

Janmaat said: "It's a big game [against Watford] now. It's important that we get that first win under the belt and Saturday is the next opportunity to do that.

"We have to win otherwise the pressure will only continue to increase. We have to offer a much bigger goalscoring threat."

The Netherlands international added: "We have to score more. There were times [against West Ham] when we were trying to get men forward, but that left us open at the back and that cannot happen.

"We didn't create that many chances and that definitely has to improve."
