The eldest son of Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney is training with Manchester City, after leaving United's development team.

Kai Rooney, 7, had started playing for United's development academy in October 2016 but has since defected to City's football set-up.

Manchester City have failed to officially comment on the news as Premier League clubs are prohibited from announcing the signing of players under the age of nine.

Kai has since lined out for the City under-7s academy team, with Rooney present, in a strange twist of fate, at Manchester City's training ground to take in his son's performances.

The development is the latest in a long line of schoolboy talent to have decamped to the blue side of Manchester.

In another high profile case, Robin van Persie's son Shaqueel also trained at City's academy while the Dutch striker was playing at Old Trafford.
