Ashley Young has admitted that Manchester United deserved to be knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Derby County on Tuesday as the Championship side showed more "intensity".
Frank Lampard's side almost beat 10-man United in normal time, but Marouane Fellaini scored a stoppage-time header to level the scores at 2-2 and take the game to penalties
Each side scored all of their spot-kicks until Phil Jones' effort was saved by Scott Carson, handing Derby a famous 8-7 win on penalties at Old Trafford.
Young captained United in the wake of Paul Pogba - who was sat in the stands - being stripped of the vice-captaincy earlier in the day by Jose Mourinho.
Speaking to MUTV after the defeat, he said: "There's disappointment in (the dressing room), as you can tell.
"I'm not too sure whether we did enough in 90 minutes to win the game, but we managed to dig deep, show character and take it to penalties. But it just wasn't enough to win the game.
"I think we said that when you play against teams from lower divisions it's going to be tough.
"I think they had more intensity than we did. When you're playing these games, you have to show that intensity and go further than the opposition.
"We didn't do that and I think we got punished and they won the game."
