Rooney signs for United

Manchester United have completed the signing of England starlet Wayne Rooney.

The Red Devils have been brokering the move with Everton for the past few days, but they have finally concluded the biggest English deal of the summer.

The 18-year-old asked for a transfer last Friday which was confirmation that Rooney was on his way out of Goodison Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have now beaten Premiership rivals Newcastle to Rooney's signature - who is the most expensive teenager in the world.

Rooney has agreed a six-year deal and is tied to United until 2010.

United have agreed an initial £20 million payment - half is due now and the other half expected this time next year.

A further £7 million is due to Everton dependent on Rooney staying at Old Trafford, how many international caps he gains, whether he agrees a new deal and how United fair on the playing front.

Of the £7 million - £3 million is guaranteed to come Everton's way.

United also confirmed that Rooney's agents Pro-Active will be due up to £1.5 million.

Everton also have a 25 percent sell-on clause installed in the agreement.

Rooney, who will wear the number eight shirt at United taking over from Nicky Butt, was delighted to have sealed the move.

"It was a tough decision to leave Everton, the club I've supported and played for all my life, but I'm excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United," said Rooney.

"I feel this can only improve my career, playing with top players in top competitions like the Champions League and I can't wait to meet up with the team."

Sir Alex Ferguson added: "I am very excited, I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years. Everyone is delighted by this signing."
