Fergie: Rio must sign now
Sir Alex Ferguson wants Rio Ferdinand to sign a new contract without delay.
Sir Alex Ferguson has again called on star stopper Rio Ferdinand to put pen-to-paper on a new deal without delay, amidst concerns that the player's refusal to commit his future could hinder Manchester United's pre-season campaign. The Red Devils have tabled a generous £100,000 per week offer although Ferdinand is reportedly holding out for another £20,000, and the club's record signing has angered Red Devils fans with his stance to date.
Ferguson has also grown increasingly impatient with the ongoing saga and first demanded that Ferdinand end growing speculation by penning a new deal in April.
With talks currently at an impasse the 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, although all parties in the contract discussions have always maintained that Ferdinand remains loyal to the club and is keen to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
However, with the UEFA Champions League qualifiers fast approaching, Ferguson is anxious that the £29.1 million man should translate his declared loyalty into a formal commitment to avoid the issue overshadowing United's pre-season preparations.
"We want Rio to sign now because it will put the whole matter to rest," said Ferguson.
"It has created speculation and an unnecessary agenda for the club we don't want.
"Rio has received a fantastic offer and I think there is going to be another meeting between his agent and [chief executive] David Gill, which I hope will happen soon.
"We want to be ready for the Champions League qualifier next month with everyone currently at the club remaining here.
"That can be solidified by Rio signing his contract and I hope he does."
