Defender insists United will be going all out for Europa League glory

Rio Ferdinand suffered UEFA Champions League heartache on Wednesday, but insists Manchester United will be looking to secure Europa League success. The Red Devils crashed out of Europe's premier club competition at the group stage following a shock 2-1 defeat to FC Basel in their final Group C fixture. Six years have passed since United last failed to reach the last 16, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side having competed in three of the last four finals. They will, however, be turning out in the Europa League in 2012, with their focus switching to Thursday night football. Ferdinand admits everyone at Old Trafford has been left hugely disappointed by their Champions League exit, but is adamant that the club will continue to give their all in their quest for continental glory. "We're in the Europa League now and I've always said that whatever competition we're in we don't enter it to come second or to get knocked out in the early stages," the England international told MUTV. "We're always in it to win it and this is no different."

Devastated

Ferdinand believes United's undoing in the Champions League was a down to their troubles on home soil, with only one victory over Otelul Galati picked up at Old Trafford. "Nights at Old Trafford, under the lights, the Champions League music, that's what you live for," he added. "We've gone out early this year and we're disappointed. But we can't blame anyone else but ourselves. "The lads are all devastated to have gone out at this stage of the tournament. But that's the reality. That's what's happened. "We have to look back at the games at Old Trafford. We've not done enough to win those games. "The manager's always said that if you don't win your home games, you don't deserve to go through. That's the case this season."
