United boss believes keeping Modric sent out a message

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Tottenham's refusal to sell Luka Modric in the summer sent a message to the rest of the squad that they are a side that mean business. It is only in the last few weeks that Spurs have drifted away from the Manchester clubs at the top of the table following defeats at Manchester City and Arsenal. They are however still in a solid third place in the table, and Ferguson believes keeping hold of Modric was the catalyst for this season's performances. Ferguson said: "The fact they decided to hold on to Modric against what everyone thought was a big Chelsea bid swung the players around. "That was an indication that they mean business and it has worked because they have had a great season. "Up until three weeks ago they were playing the best football in the league."

Unbeaten

United are unbeaten in their last 25 games against Tottenham, including a 3-0 win at Old Trafford in August. But Ferguson knows that the North London club are an improving force under Harry Redknapp. He added: "He (Redknapp) has added a lot of exciting players. He has changed them right round in the last few years. "(Kyle) Walker has been a tremendous full-back for them this season. He has great pace going forward. And they have pace from the other side from (Gareth) Bale. "They have really clever players and everyone recognizes what a terrific player Modric is. "Overall, they have had a great season. "They have hit a plateau but we know Sunday is an important game for us. The most important game so far."
