Juan Mata says that Manchester United's main target this season is winning the Premier League title

Juan Mata has told Sky Sports News HQ that Manchester United's main target this season is winning the Premier League.

"We all believe that we need to do one more step forward and try to fight for the title because that’s what this club means - fighting for trophies," the midfielder said.

"It's the pressure this club always has. We know that we have to be fighting for titles."

The 27-year-old added: "We feel this is what the fans deserve because it’s amazing how they support us. We want to do it for them, and hopefully this season we'll do it."

United are currently training in the US, where they opened their pre-season tour with a 1-0 win over Club America on Saturday.

New midfield signings Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger both made their debuts in the game, but Mata says he is not too concerned about potentially losing his place in the side.

"When you play for a top team, you always know you have to be at your best level to play," the Spaniard said. "There is a lot of competition for the spots in the first XI, but I believe in myself.

"If you play for a team like Manchester United, you're always going to have competition."

Mata's team-mate Phil Jones has also talked up United’s title chances, saying: "We have the squad now to be able to do that and there is no reason why we can't."
