Louis van Gaal admits Memphis Depay 'struggling to adapt to English football'

Louis van Gaal admits Memphis Depay is struggling to adapt to the pace of the Premier League but has every confidence that his fellow Dutchman will be a success in the top flight of English football.

On Tuesday, Depay returns to the club he left earlier this year, PSV Eindhoven, as Manchester United open their Champions League campaign in the Netherlands.

Since moving to Old Trafford, Depay has failed to score in five Premier League outings although he did net twice in a Champions League qualifier against Bruges.

But van Gaal believes his new signing will turn it around, saying: "As a manager, you are never satisfied but he is doing well.

"He has played every game until now but it's not so easy. It's a high rhythm in the Premier League but he has to adapt to that high rhythm and he shall improve I think.

"I have to be patient for Memphis and the fans do also."

And van Gaal is hoping United are good enough to compete with the best in Europe, as they return to the top table following a season's absence.
