Spartak's star striker doubtful for top-of-the-group clash

Spartak Moscow look set to be without star striker Welliton for their Champions League clash with Chelsea. The 23-year-old Brazilian suffered a thigh injury in the second half of Tuesday night's 3-0 win over MSK Zilina. The Russian Premier League club confirmed on Thursday that the injury would rule Welliton out for up to three weeks, making him doubtful for their next Group F match at home to Chelsea on October 19. "Welliton has a minor muscle tear of his left thigh," read a statement on the club's official website. "It'll take him two to three weeks to recover."

Top scorer

Welliton is top scorer in the Russian Premier League with 16 goals in 21 matches after topping the scoring charts with 21 strikes last season. Spartak are joint top of Group F with Chelsea with both having taken six points from their opening two games. The two sides now have back-to-back games before facing Marseille and Zilina again.
