Rafa encouraged by talks

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed his talks with the club's new owners went well.

Benitez met American duo George Gillett and Tom Hicks over the weekend to discuss plans for the future.

The Spaniard has been reassured that the owners will back in him the transfer market to try and lift Liverpool to the next level.

"We spoke about our ideas for the future and it was very good," Benitez told The Sun.

"Everything was positive and, for me, the future of this club looks brilliant.

"I don't want to talk about specifics or figures because this is a Champions League game, but they said we will go in the right direction."

Meanwhile, Benitez has hailed the impact of Javier Mascherano since his arrival into the team.

Benitez believes Liverpool pulled off a coup bringing the midfielder to the club in January and has described him as a "monster."

"On Saturday, people could see that he is a really good player," added Benitez.

"We knew when we decided to bring Mascherano here that we needed another holding midfielder in case Xabi Alonso couldn't play.

"On Saturday we played both of them together, which gave freedom to the wingers and to Steven Gerrard.

"I said when we signed him that he is a winner.

"He's a player with a very good mentality. He has 20 caps with Argentina and he's 22 years old.

"Of all the youngsters to have come through in recent seasons, the one who's impressed me most is Mascherano. He's a monster of a player and is destined for great things.

"He can keep possession and he's always in the right position. He wanted to show people he was good enough to play in England."
