Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor believes Luis Suarez's eight-match suspension sends out a strong message that racism will not be tolerated.
Patrice Evra accused Suarez of racially abusing him after Manchester United's Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield on 15th October.
The Football Association charged Suarez with misconduct and an Independent Regulatory Commission appointed by the FA on Tuesday found the Uruguayan guilty.
Suarez has now been given an eight-match ban, although Liverpool will have two weeks to lodge an appeal from the day they receive the FA's written reasons for their decision.
Multicultural society
The Reds have already released a statement expressing their disappointment with the FA, while Suarez has described the latest developments as 'difficult' and 'painful'.
Taylor says the FA must have had 'compelling evidence' to reach such a decision and feels it is important that players know for the future that racist behaviour will be punished.
"We are a multicultural society but also our football is very cosmopolitan and it is important that we send out the strongest message if there has been racist abuse," Taylor told
Sky Sports News.
"Clearly it is an Independent Regulatory Commission set up by the FA. They must have had compelling evidence to come out with such a very strong sanction as a deterrent for the future."
