New Liverpool signing Christian Benteke said a chat with manager Brendan Rodgers convinced him to join the club.

The Belgian striker completed his £32.5m transfer from Aston Villa on Wednesday after completing his medical.

And the 24-year-old told Liverpool TV that Rodgers was key to the move by convincing Benteke he was making the right decision in moving to Anfield.

He said: “It's hard to show your emotion when you've just come from doing something (like this) but of course I am very happy.

“I think it was the right club for me because I had good chat with the manager and wanted to be part of his project.

“I’m very happy to be here and I would like to thank the owners, Ian (Ayre) and of course the manager for their massive effort to bring me here.”

Benteke, who joins fellow Belgium internationals Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi at Anfield, scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa.

And the striker said he has joined Liverpool to win trophies.

He added: “I know Liverpool is a big story. They've won league titles and the Champions League five times and of course the UEFA Cup and a lot of trophies. I know it's a big club.

"I came here to win trophies. I came here to reach some great goals with the team."
