But Koscielny, currently captaining the Gunners in Per Mertesacker's absence, was out on the training pitches at London Colney on the eve of the club's European opener.

Later on Monday Wenger told his pre-match news conference in Paris that his fellow Frenchman will be fit to continue his new partnership with £35m signing Shkodran Mustafi.

Arsenal 2-1 Southampton

"He's all right - he had a big knock on his face but he recovered quite well," Wenger said. "I was concerned after the game that he wouldn't be available tomorrow, but he is all right."

Koscielny scored an acrobatic equaliser in a 2-1 success against Saints on his 31st birthday, earning the praise of his manager.

"What I like is he made that at 1-0 down," Wenger said at the weekend. "Not when you have scored three or four already. That shows he is a special character."
