Arsenal are expected to hold contract talks with Per Mertesacker this month, according to Sky sources.

It is understood the Gunners have the option to extend the Germany international's contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Reports on Wednesday claimed that Mertesacker has been told he can leave the Emirates this month, but there is nothing to suggest such a conversation has taken place.

Mertesacker says he's hopeful of returning in the New Year

The 32-year-old has not played for Arsenal at all this season after suffering a serious knee injury in pre-season, which required surgery.

But he was manager Arsene Wenger's first-choice centre-back last season, making 36 appearances, and he has made over 200 in all competitions since his £8m move from Werder Bremen in 2011.

Mertesacker, who has won two FA Cups with the Gunners, began his career at Hannover 96 before a five-year spell at Werder Bremen.
