Arsenal boss Unai Emery believes his team are heading in the right direction after a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool.

The Spaniard kicked off his Arsenal reign with back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea in August but extended their unbeaten run to 14 games in all competitions with an entertaining draw against top-of-the-table Liverpool on Saturday.

Emery says he is happy with the improvement he's seeing from his side.

"I am happy with the performance," he said. "I think on the balance of 90 minutes there were more and more positives in the control against them, but it's very difficult not to let them have chances also.

"You need a little luck in some moments in the matches and we also need when we're attacking to find our goal.

"The result in the end, 1-1, is a good result for the whole of the match and after we were losing 1-0. And we deserve it also."

Emery picked out areas where he believes his side are improving.

"Today was a good test for us but we need more in our work and also tactically. But the spirit is like what we want. The supporters were pushing us for 90 minutes. Today was a good platform.

"I think the progress is with time, long time. Football is very difficult to ask for a lot of time but I think in these three matches [against City, Chelsea and Liverpool], today was a more complete game for us."

Emery had praise for substitute Alex Iwobi, whose through ball set up Alexandre Lacazette for the equaliser.

"We need every player and the characteristics each player has is important," said Emery. "Iwobi can impact high [up the pitch]. After starting on the bench, today he is better on the left and his impact on the match, his energy, his quality.

"He can improve, he can do better also because I want him more near the goal to have chances to score. He is very young, he's improving but also has the ambition because he can do more."
