Arsenal boss Unai Emery has confirmed Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on a broken ankle.
Welbeck suffered the injury after landing awkwardly during the 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.
The 27-year-old spent the evening in hospital and Emery has confirmed the England international had an operation to correct the injury on Friday.
"Danny Welbeck's injury is a big injury," said Emery, in his post-match press conference after the 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday.
"We spoke with him yesterday and today. We support him with our personal relationship between the player and the staff.
"I think he is not going to be with us for a long time."
When asked if Welbeck had suffered a broken ankle as previously suspected, Emery added: "Yes. He had an operation on Friday."
Welbeck now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines but Emery refused to speculate on whether to striker will be able to return to action before the end of the season.
"I think it's better for the doctor to say to you," he said.
"It's a big injury but the outcome, the doctor can answer that better than me."
Welbeck was originally named in the England squad for the upcoming internationals against the United States and Croatia.
Sky sources understand manager Gareth Southgate is not likely to call up a replacement for the Arsenal forward.
