Arsenal's Danny Welbeck vows to come back stronger than ever from broken ankle

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has returned home from a second operation on his broken ankle and has vowed to come "back stronger than ever before".

The 27-year-old faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing two lots of surgery on the injury which he suffered when falling awkwardly during the goalless Europa League draw with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

In a post on Twitter on Tuesday, Welbeck said: "Back home. Thanks for all the love and support. No doubt I will be back stronger than ever before. Recovery grind starts now."

The striker missed the Gunners' 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday, but goalkeeper Bernd Leno revealed he shared a FaceTime call with the players to wish them good luck.

Welbeck had been enjoying a consistent run in the team, scoring five goals in 16 appearances in all competitions before the setback.

A statement released by Arsenal on Monday read: "Further to sustaining an injury last Thursday against Sporting CP, Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle.

"Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It's too early to say how long this will take.
