Cygan will make French national team - Wenger

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger believes that new signing Pascal Cygan is good enough to progress into the French national team.

Speaking at Cygan's first press conference following his move to The Gunners from French Le Championnat side Lille, Wenger was delighted to capture the 28-year-old.

"I'm delighted, because he's an organiser and a leader at the back," said Wenger. "I like this type of player. He's left footed, so he'll compliment Keown and Campbell.

"I believe he's the right age for a central defender. He's experienced enough due to his time at Lille. He's used to playing at the level were we play.

"I was looking at Cygan for a while. It was very difficult to find good centre back. Of course you have to take a chance and a gamble, but this is a small gamble.

"He will become a better player here, and make the French national team," concluded Wenger.

Meanwhile the player himself was delighted to be moving to the North London outfit claiming he always wanted move abroad at some stage in his career.

"I am very happy to be at Arsenal," said Cygan. "I've come here to play at the top level. It also helped because the manager is French and also the club has French players.

"I always wanted to go abroad, but given a choice, England was my first option. At Lille I was fortunate as we played in the Second Division together and built up our confidence slowly.

"I don't feel that making the French team is my first target; getting a regular place in first team at Arsenal is.

"If I can do that then I think I can make it into the French national team," concluded Cygan.

David Dein confirmed the player has been signed due to player retirements and the uncertainty surrounding the future of Tony Adams at the club.

"Martin Keown has actually signed his contract and so has Luzhny, and we're in final stages of re-signing Seaman," confirmed Dein. "We're currently awaiting an official decision from Adams.

"We're assuming he will retire, but it's his perogative. Grimandi and Dixon have retired."
