French starlet says Premier League move can wait

Le Havre starlet Benjamin Mendy claims to be aware of Arsenal's interest in his services, but says he is planning to remain in France for now. The Gunners, famed for their production and nurturing of young talent, were said to be keen on taking the highly-rated defender to England last summer. No deal was put in place, though, and Mendy eventually agreed a three-year contract with Le Havre. He has every intention of honouring that agreement, with it too early in his career to take on a new challenge in one of Europe's top divisions. He admits he has ambitions of one day playing in the Premier League, but feels it would wise for him to wait before making such a big step up in class. "There was interest from a lot of clubs. I know Arsenal were one," Mendy told L'Equipe. "But I have a sensible head on my shoulders. I am still living at the education centre here with my friends who play for the reserves. I have not changed. "After Le Havre, I would like to spend two seasons in Ligue 1 and then go to England. "I would then like to go to Barcelona, where my idol Dani Alves plays."
