Arsene Wenger should buy Morgan Schneiderlin, says Alan Smith

Former Arsenal striker and Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith believes Arsene Wenger should look to sign players that can make a difference, such as Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton.

Manager Wenger has said the club are unlikely to spend big on the biggest names available in the transfer market this summer, despite winning the FA Cup for a second successive year.

New additions are likely and the Gunners have been linked with the likes of Schneiderlin, who is the subject of interest from a number of other clubs including north London rivals Tottenham, and out-of-contract Chelsea keeper Petr Cech.

But Smith told Sky Sports News HQ that Wenger does not have to spend big to get good players.

"You could buy Petr Cech for £10m, which isn't big in terms of the fee," he said.

"You can buy players that can make a difference, like Morgan Schneiderlin, who is available for £25m. That's not a big fee for Arsenal these days, when you look at how much they paid for Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

"I think he is trying to dip into the transfer market but it's the positions that he is going to try and recruit that will be interesting."

Wenger, whose side finished third in the Premier League, previously said: "I am not against spending money. I have shown that recently.

"But I want a good rapport between price and quality. I'm always more focused on quality."

“Santi Cazorla was voted man of the match in the final and he did not cost £150m, while Francis Coquelin was one of the best players on the pitch. You have to always look at the real quality of people."
