Peter Reid was a crucial part of the late Howard Kendall’s Everton team in the 1980’s

Peter Reid says he will never forget the day Howard Kendall led Everton to FA Cup glory in 1984.

Kendall passed away at the age of 69 on Saturday with Everton hailing him as the club's "most successful manager" and paying their respects to him prior to the 3-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester United at Goodison Park.

Having enjoyed seven years as a player with Everton between 1967 and 1974, Kendall made his return to the club as manager in 1981 and again in 1997. He led the Toffees to two leagues titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup during his first spell.

Reid, a £60,000 signing from Bolton Wanderers in 1982, says the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Watford at Wembley was the spark for a golden era of success under Kendall.

"When I think of Howard and him coming down the steps of Wembley, he had a light silvery suit on and his smile just lit up Wembley Stadium," he told Sky Sports News HQ

"I always think the hardest trophy to win is that first one. His face showed it that day, money couldn't buy it, it was beautiful."

Reid feels the squad assembled by Kendall also ensured that the team spirit was always high in the ranks.

"It was very professional, but fun. You wanted to go in and train, you didn't want to get beat," Reid added.

"I always think when you look at good sides, they've always got a good dressing room and it didn't get any better than that dressing room. We just use to have such a laugh together."
