Testimonial for Unsworth

EVERTON have handed defender David Unsworth a testimonial, which will be staged at Goodison Park in the summer.

Though the opposition for the match has yet to be confirmed, Unsworth has been rewarded for his long service to The Toffees in two spells on Merseyside.

Unsworth started his career with Everton in 1992 and spent five years with the club before moving to West Ham where he stayed a year before a brief sojourn at Aston Villa.

The 28-year-old was at Villa Park for just two months before he returned to Goodison Park in August 1998, and he has remained a pivotal figure under Toffees boss Walter Smith.

He has made 270 appearances during his two stints with the club, and made his only England appearance against Japan, during his first stay in 1995.

Unsworth admits he is delighted to be rewarded with the testimonial.

"It is fantastic news," he told evertonfc.tv. "Michael Dunford informed my agent that's the case and I'm made up that a game will be taking place for myself.

"They are a very rare occurence these days. It is a tribute to any player who has given ten or more years service to a club and my feelings about that have been well documented over the years."

Meanwhile, Everton have informed the Football Association that they wish to enter the Intertoto Cup next season.

Everton will have to finish at least 12th, and then be one of the two highest placed teams in The Premiership who have failed to qualify for Europe if they are to be successful in their quest.
