Fabrice Muamba returned to the pitch at Bolton on Saturday four years on from his retirement as he featured in a charity match.

The midfielder was forced to quit at the age of 24 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Muamba's heart stopped for 78 minutes and, although he later made a full recovery, the incident meant the end of a professional career that had brought international recognition with England U21s.

But he was back in Bolton colours at the Macron Stadium in a legends' match also featuring the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha and Dean Holdsworth, appearing as a 33rd-minute substitute.

Muamba immediately laid on a goal for Okocha before winning a penalty he converted himself.

The game was played in aid of the Bolton Wanderers Community Trust and Bolton Wanderers Supporters' Trust.

"I really enjoyed it, I lasted longer than I thought I would," Muamba said.

"I play now and again with my eldest son and I'm trying to keep myself fit at the same time. It was very, very good just to see some old faces and old friends. To be able to put some smiles on the Bolton fans' faces was great.

"The Bolton fans are always special to me, regardless of whether I'm here or not. It's a town that means so much to me. It's a shame that we're in this very, very difficult situation.

"This is the first time I've played on a big pitch, I ran around a little bit but it felt good."
