Neil Lennon has emerged as the new favourite to be the next Bolton manager with Sky Bet reporting a surge of backing for the former Celtic boss.

The bookmaker’s market has already seen a range of different favourites with Chris Hughton, Tony Mowbray, Phil Brown and Jimmy Phillips all attracting significant support at various points since Dougie Freedman’s departure.

However, it is Lennon who is now attracting the vast majority of backing, prompting his odds to plummet from 10/1 on Thursday to his current odds-on price.

Freedman parted company with the Trotters following a disappointing start to the season, with just one win in 11, form which interim bosses Lee Turner and Andy Hughes failed to amend as they went down 2-1 to Bournemouth last Saturday.

Neither are considered to have a realistic chance of being appointed as permanent boss, with the former 40/1 and the latter not even priced up in Sky Bet’s market.

Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer said: “We initially cut Lennon’s price following interest from some more influential punters and the majority of the money we’ve seen since has been on him.

“However, it seems somewhat of an odd fit with Lennon lacking experience in the Championship, something which chairman Phil Gartside was supposedly keen on, while he’s also been linked with Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ittihad.”
