Victor Wanyama is refusing to get carried away after Tottenham's impressive victory over Manchester City.
Spurs ended City's perfect start to the season with a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane before the international break.
The result maintained Spurs' unbeaten record and saw them close to within one point of City at the top of the Premier League table.
But Wanyama told Sky Sports: "It's still early in the season, it was a big game but it doesn't make us contenders because we won.
"We just want to go to every game, get positive results and see from there."
Reflecting on the win over City, which was achieved despite Erik Lamela missing a penalty, Wanyama added: "We knew they were a good side, the key was to win every battle on the pitch and make sure we won the game.
"It's simple to say but it's very tough to do it. It was a tough game, they are a hard team to beat.
"Our aim was to press high and try to win the ball as high as we could.
"Everyone was ready for the challenge and we stepped up as a team and showed what we can do."
Wanyama has started every Premier League game this season after joining Spurs in the summer from Southampton.
The move saw the midfielder reunite with manager Mauricio Pochettino, who also signed him when was at Saints.
"He always wants to improve, he doesn't want to stand still," says Wanyama of Pochettino. "They did very well last season but we need to improve.
"They set the bar very high and the challenge is to improve.
"The manager knows me very well and what I can do, that is why he brought me here."
