U's make record signings
Colchester have broken their transfer record twice with Mark Yeates and Clive Platt.
Colchester United have broken their transfer record twice in a matter of hours after bringing Mark Yeates and Clive Platt to Layer Road.Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yeates - who spent a spell on loan with Colchester in the 2005/2006 season - was the first to join the Championship club as he broke the club transfer record previously held by the signings of Neil Gregory and Adrian Coote.
Yeates was quickly superseded by Platt though, who has arrived to replace Chris Iwelumo after moving from Milton Keynes for a reported £300,000.
As revealed by skysports.com last month, Colchester had tabled a bid for the giant striker as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Platt (pictured) scored 18 times in League Two last season and, along with Yeates, will strengthen Geraint Williams' side as the manager looks to build on the club's impressive exploits last season.
Responding to the two record-breaking arrivals, Colchester chief executive Marie Painter told the club's fans to expect further high-profile signings.
"These are the first two signings in what will be a very busy campaign in securing the club's squad for next season's push in the Championship," Painter told the club's official website.
"There is a great deal of exciting news to come."
The club have confirmed that both deals will be completed on Wednesday.
