Stoke midfielder recognises ability of Pulis target Palacios

Dean Whitehead reckons Stoke target Wilson Palacios would be warmly received at the Britannia Stadium. Potters boss Tony Pulis has reportedly put offers on the table for Palacios and his Tottenham team-mate Peter Crouch as he looks to bolster his squad further before the transfer deadline. Whitehead would be in direct competition with Palacios for a place in the Stoke midfield but acknowledged the quality of the 27-year-old Honduras international. "He's been a good player," he told The Sentinel. "He burst onto the scene at Wigan and looked a right good player to get his move to Spurs. "They've got loads of excellent players there, so who knows? But if he came here I'm sure he'd be welcomed with open arms." Palacios made 16 Premier League starts last season and would be pushed further down Spurs' pecking order if manager Harry Redknapp can land Real Madrid's Lassana Diarra.

Transfer talk

The former Wigan man has emerged as one of Stoke's top targets but Whitehead does not let the transfer talk affect his game. "Every club is the same, I suppose," he said. "You are linked to a lot of players over the summer - and ones in your position. "You just keep your head down, do your own job and make sure you are fit. "I'm sure there is a lot going on, but the gaffer is keeping his cards close to his chest." And although Pulis has only managed to sign defenders Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson so far, Whitehead expects several more signings as the deadline approaches. "When you come in from pre-season you expect two or three new faces and that gets the lads up and raring to go for the new season," he added. "A few additions would be perfect and come deadline day this will be a busy place."
