Aston Villa have made contact with renowned assistant manager and coach Steve Round about joining their staff, according to Sky sources.

Several national newspapers have reported that Round is set to join Remi Garde as his assistant at Villa, but Sky Sports News HQ understands that no formal offer has yet been made.

Garde has been on the hunt to fill a number of coaching positions since he was denied the chance to speak to his former assistants at Lyon, Bruno Genesio and Gerald Baticle, because they still work for the French Ligue 1 club.

Round has been out of work since leaving a part-time role with Derby County in the summer, after he was sacked by Manchester United along with David Moyes in April 2014.

It was reported in the summer that he also turned down the chance to become Steve McClaren's assistant at Newcastle, who Round worked with at Derby from January to June in 2015.

Round began his coaching career with McClaren at Derby before becoming his assistant at Middlesbrough in 2001.

Round followed McClaren to England while continuing his role at Boro under Gareth Southgate, before leaving the Teesside club over disagreements in football philosophy.
