SOUTHGATE HITS OUT AT VILLAN TREATMENT

ASTON VILLA's want-away defender Gareth Southgate has hit out at his treatment by the club, accusing the Villa Park outfit of stirring up a hate campaign against him.

The England international, who handed in a transfer request during the summer, has been targeted by a section of Villan fans - culminating in vandalism to his car.

However, Southgate is livid with the treatment that he has received from manager John Gregory and chairman Doug Ellis, saying: "Some of the comments made by the club about me have been outrageous and unnecessary.

"They made me out to be a real villain and gave me a reputation that is totally undeserved. All I have done is to say I want to advance my career at another club and I am quite entitled to do that.

"I have had people yelling abuse at me out of their cars - but I don't see why I should tolerate vandalism. I can take verbal stick from supporters - that is their right - but when it comes to damaging property, when it affects my family life, it's time to draw the line.

"Villa have made some strong allegations, it's not surprising the fans are upset, but I'll still give my best to Villa. I don't see that anyone can question my commitment.
