Milner upbeat for Villa

James Milner has backed Aston Villa to emerge from their slump.

James Milner has backed Aston Villa to emerge from their slump in the derby against Birmingham City.

Villa have suffered a frustrating start to the season and have won only once in their opening eight Premiership games.

David O'Leary has attributed the lack of form to the fact Villa are shorn of key players due to injury.

The international break could afford the Villa boss the time needed to nurse a couple of his players back to fitness before the next game against Birmingham.

England Under-21 ace Milner, meanwhile, feels the international fixtures could also help to lift the gloom around Villa Park ahead of the clash with Blues.

Milner is confident there is too much quality in the squad to be languishing in the lower reaches of the table and has backed the team to rediscover the winning thread.

"Hopefully the players can put in some good displays on international duty, then come back refreshed and have a real go at Birmingham," said Milner.

"We've got a good team spirit and with the quality we've got we'll get through this sticky pitch."
