Magpies call Milner back

Newcastle winger James Milner's proposed return to Aston Villa appears to be off.

James Milner's proposed return to Aston Villa appears to be off after he was summoned back to Newcastle United.

The England Under-21 international had been given permission to travel to Villa Park to discuss a transfer.

Milner, who spent last term on loan in the Midlands, seemed to be closing on a permanent move to Villa.

But Newcastle have confirmed that the young winger has been recalled to St James' Park and that talks have been broken off.

The 20-year-old made 27 Premiership appearances for Villa last term and former boss David O'Leary want to hang on to Milner.

O'Leary's successor Martin O'Neill was similarly keen on the exciting wide man, but Magpies boss Glenn Roeder appears to have undergone a change of heart.
