Premier League: Paul Lambert has no excuses after Aston Villa loss

Paul Lambert believes Aston Villa "got what we deserved" after a poor showing in the 3-0 defeat against Everton.

Coming off the back of a four-game run involving each of last season's top four, Villa had secured three points from a possible 12.

Indeed, in Everton they faced last season's fifth-placed team, and put in perhaps the least-impressive performance of all, with the hosts easing to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Lambert was under no illusions after the game either, telling Sky Sports: "I thought we got what we deserved. We didn't deserve to win the game.

"We lost poor goals at bad times. The first goal was poor, just a cross. The second Guzan should have saved, and that's coming from a guy that's kept us in games. The third came off the back of a quick free-kick. We didn't deserve anything.

"We spoke about it before - you don't switch off against Everton. They finished in the top five last year, they're a really good side. We had to be better and we weren't, so you take your medicine."

Villa's best chance came midway into the second half, with Christian Benteke causing havoc from Kieran Richardson's cross. The Belgian headed against the crossbar before firing in the rebound, but the referee had blown for a free-kick for a blatant push on Everton defender Antolin Alcaraz in the process.

The Villa manager had no complaints over the decision, either.

"I couldn't really see that. The referee calls it the way it goes, but it would've been a consolation.

"Alan (Hutton) had a chance in the first half and we had a bit of pressure, but we were beaten."

Much has been made of Villa's lack of potency this season, as they added just two more shots on target to bring their seasonal tally to 12 in eight Premier League games so far.

It was also their fourth consecutive game without a goal, the first instance at the club since November of last year.

When asked whether he is worrying about his side's lack of goals - a joint league-low of four with QPR - Lambert was defiant, backing the returning Christian Benteke to reignite his previous form.

"He'll certainly go a long way. We've got goals in this side. We've got to create more. We've got N'Zogbia, Benteke, Agbonlahor, Richardson and Cleverley on the pitch. There's lads there that can score. We didn't have a good day.

"We're coming in next week and we go again. You don't let it manifest, you pick them up. We'll try and win the next game as that's the best remedy for it.
