Newcastle are waiting to discover the extent of a knee injury goalkeeper Tim Krul suffered playing for the Netherlands.
Krul was substituted towards the end of a 2-1 win in Kazakhstan after falling awkwardly on his knee.
And Newcastle, bottom of the Premier League, can ill-afford to lose their first-choice 'keeper given No 2 Karl Darlow is currently out with a foot injury.
"Gutted to come off with an injury tonight. Thanks for all the get well wishes. I will know more about the extent of the injury after scans," tweeted the 27 year-old after the match.
Sky sources understand Krul will undergo a scan on his knee on Sunday evening to determine the full extent of the damage sustained.
Netherlands head coach Danny Blind suggested that the artificial pitch used at Kazakhstan's Astana Arena may have been to blame.
"It looks like a bad [knee] injury. Tim landed the wrong way," said the former Ajax manager.
"It could be that it was because of the artificial turf, but I dare not say."
Newcastle's third-choice 'keeper is Rob Elliot, who has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for their final European Qualifier in Poland.
Krul's compatriot Daryl Janmaat pulled out of the Netherlands squad with a knee injury, although Newcastle are hopeful he will be fit for the Super Sunday game against Norwich next weekend.
