Under-fire Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has suffered an injury blow, with centre-back Mike Williamson likely to miss Sunday's Sky Live game at home to Liverpool.

Williamson had just been recalled from a loan spell with Sky Bet Championship side Wolves, where he made five appearances, after Jamaal Lascelles injured his hamstring in the 5-1 Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace.

Experienced defender Williamson was in line to start against Jurgen Klopp's side but he tweaked his hamstring in training and is a major doubt for the game against in-form Liverpool, who thrashed Southampton 6-1 in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren says his players are lacking confidence but believes they have the right character to climb the Premier League table

Newcastle are second-bottom of the table and go into Sunday's match on the back of successive defeats, having lost 3-0 at home to Leicester on November 21 before being thrashed at Selhurst Park last weekend.

McClaren must now prepare for the game knowing he is unlikely to be able to call upon experienced defender Williamson, who has played 170 times for the club since signing from Portsmouth for £3m in January 2010.

As well as injuries to Williamson and Lascelles, midfielder Cheick Tiote is also ruled out after failing to recover from a muscle problem.
