Crystal Palace are set to activate Newcastle midfielder Andros Townsend's £13m release clause, according to Sky sources.

Newcastle have not yet received an official bid from Palace, but Sky sources understand the move is expected and the Championship club are bracing themselves for the bid.

Townsend joined the Magpies from Tottenham in January having dropped down the pecking order at Spurs.

The 24-year-old scored four goals in 13 appearances for Newcastle, who saw McClaren sacked but failed to avoid relegation to the Championship under the management of Rafa Benitez.
