Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark is undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed £5m move to Newcastle, according to Sky sources.
The Magpies are aiming to secure their eighth signing of the summer after activating the 26-year-old's release clause on Monday evening.
Clark, who can play at centre-back, left-back or in a holding midfield role, has spent his entire professional career at Villa, making over 150 appearances for the club.
He has four years remaining on his current contract at Villa Park, but would become the sixth first-team player to depart the club this summer if he completes his switch to the north east.
Clark's potential exit will also come as a disappointment to new Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo, who recently expressed his desire to keep him at the club.
"Ciaran is a Villa man, a Villa boy, he has pledged his future to us. He will be staying with us," Di Matteo said.
"He is very happy to be with us, to stay here. I know he has a long-term contract as well."
Clark featured twice for Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016 and has been capped 19 times by his country.
