Jonjo Shelvey nearly scored one of the goals of the season when he hit the bar from his own half in Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday

Jonjo Shelvey nearly scored one of the goals of the season when he hit the bar from his own half in Newcastle's 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

The English midfielder looked up from just over 50 yards before trying to catch out Owls goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, but his effort agonisingly rattled the woodwork before bouncing clear.

And Newcastle would live to regret the miss as Tom Lees and Steven Fletcher struck after the break to take the game away from the Toon, before Shelvey himself netted a late consolation goal at Hillsborough.

Despite the defeat, Newcastle remain 10 points clear of Huddersfield in third with five games to go, although the Terriers have one in hand. Rafa Benitez's side did, however, fail to regain top spot from Brighton, who won on Friday night.
