Anderlecht have agreed a loan deal with Newcastle for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to Sky sources.
The Serbian reportedly had a number of options to go elsewhere, including Bordeaux and Hamburg.
Sky Sports reported last week that Brighton had a bid in the region of £8m rejected because Newcastle did not want to sell to a rival.
Sky sources understand that the Magpies have agreed a deal to sign Leicester's Islam Slimani on loan as a replacement for Mitrovic.
West Ham and Monaco were also thought to be interested in Slimani but Newcastle appear to have won the race for the player's signature.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has been keen on bringing in a striker in the January transfer window, but had a club-record bid for Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen rejected and missed out on Daniel Sturridge, who opted to join West Brom on loan.
Mitrovic, 23, has been sidelined for over a month with a back injury and has not started a Premier League game this season.
He returns to Anderlecht, having moved to Newcastle from the Belgian club for £13m in the summer of 2015.
