GOMA BLOW FOR MAGPIES

NEWCASTLE UNITED have been told that defender Alain Goma could be out for six weeks after suffering a broken hand in the 3-1 defeat at Chelsea last week.

The Frenchman, who has played a big part in the Newcastle side this season despite being on the transfer list, has been ruled out of action until the derby with Middlesbrough on March 17.

Goma's hand was trodden on during the Premiership clash last Wednesday, but he thought that he had only suffered bruising before finally having an X-ray on Friday.

He has been put in a cast, but coach Mick Wadsworth has revealed that he will not play while the cast is on due to the fragility of the hand.

"This is a heck of a blow for us but it is something we will just have to get on with," said Wadsworth. "This is an unstable fracture so he will not be able to play with any sort of cast."

Players are allowed to play wearing casts if match referees allow it, but it would appear that Marcelino will now deputise at Charlton on Sunday.
